Remember in June when I committed to writing daily and publishing weekly posts? For a while, I was on a roll, writing and publishing as often as my schedule allowed. It fueled me, and I loved it. The ideas flowed, and I was in a groove. Lately, I’ve fallen off the wagon a bit, but rest assured, I didn’t disappear. I’m still here.
About a month ago, I met with a friend to interview him for an article highlighting his family’s nonprofit. We had a great conversation and discussed our personal lives afterward. I told him I’d been a little down; I was trying to figure out what’s next for me. I feel like there is something new just around the corner, but what?
He asked me what drives me. I told him I loved my job. He said, “That isn’t what I asked. What really drives you? Why do you get out of bed in the morning?”
The obvious answer to the last question was to pee…ha ha…but I knew what he was getting at.
I knew the answer immediately – storytelling. I love telling stories about people, businesses, trials, tribulations, the works. I also love nonprofit work. It fills my soul to help other people. Writing for a living, while doable, is a bit of a hustle to find clients, publications and outlets. It is also a cash flow game, which is challenging as a single-earner household. I love it, but it requires full-time effort to be successful.
What if I combined my love for storytelling and helping other people? Instead of being pretty good at a bunch of things, I can funnel my passions into a single project and be really great at one thing! So that’s what I’m doing.
Actually, my daughter Bee and I are working on this new business idea together. We will have an official announcement about the Washington Nonprofit Network later this week. In the meantime, you can take a sneak peek at what we’re doing on Facebook and Instagram.

Love this for you! It’s amazing how the way someone asks a question we’ve been asked before can change the answer. Happy you found a new outlet for your passion.
